Progress on Penny's Coop: Penny and I added the framing for our roof this weekend.
Penny was out sitting inside the coop and noticed how cool it was going to be with the shade of the tree and the nice breeze that was blowing today. Her girls are going to have a nice home when we finish.
It was a really nice day to work outside today. The rain this week washed some of the pollen out of the air. It is still very heavy but the rain helped. We will continue to update our progress.
We do what we like, like what we do. We have Black stars, Rhode Island Reds, Buff Orpingtons and Barred Rock hens. Scout and Molly out back and Cricket inside keep guard along with Tux the cat. Our home is our haven and we love our hobbies!

Down Time
Today was supposed to be a great time on Kentucky Lake for Gary and Chris, fishing and enjoying the day. Unfortunately, the water down about five feet and the depth became an issue. While idling the motor hit a big rock on the bottom and messed up the motor. Gary is sooo bummed out but we'll get it fixed. He says it may be a possible claim on our insurance. Anyway, all is well and the men are fine. Might stain coop wood today after all!

Construction Begins
Penny jumps in and begins staining the base.
Great day but it is getting hot quickly.
I cut the up rites and Penny is off staining them.
The base is in place and we will wait until the adhesive cures before adding the uprites.
Gary and I put together the base wood and he used adhesive to secure it to the top cap stones on the foundation. We bought Sable stain for the main body of the coop and Sage for the trim. We stained the boards before assembly. The day was beautiful and spending it doing this with him is just awesome!

Messy Day
Too stormy to work on the coop today. Flash flood warnings, wicked lightning strikes! Cricket is not loving the thunder and lightning and Scout and Mollie are tucked in! It's a good night for blogging and watching the Vandy vs. Harvard game!

This is a great resource for all things relating to raising and keeping chickens. Andy Schneider is the guys name and he and his wife Jen (and baby Caleb) travel the country giving talks and informational meetings to educate and support flock owners. Besides, Andy has a great sense of humor and makes it fun!

This is the coop
The name of the coop we are building is "the witchata cabin coop". This is a couple of pics off of backyard chickens.com
This is the area in our yard we selected to start our project. It is next to our garden and has a tree so our girls will have some shade.
Just another angle of the area selected.
View from our deck. The coop and the run will be 10' X 5'. The ground was really soft this time of year so the digging was easy.
Dug out the foundation. Found lots of roots from the tree. But it was worth doing next to the tree so we have shade on those hot days.
Put down some hardware cloth for a predator barrier and started to lay the foundation.
Gary working to put in the foundation. Cool day overcast but was a really nice day to be outside working. Will continue to post updates as we make progress. With the time change I should have time in the afternoons to work if the weather is good.

Crazy day!
I don't know how my ladies would have fared yesterday during the storm! I think we need to go with strong wood vs siding for days when we have no choice but to hunker down and hope for the best! I just have to find someone with wood they want to get rid of or else go buy it. I am a fan of reuse and recycle!
